Arbiters
From MLB4Uwiki
A third party hired by Major League Baseball Labor Relations Department and the Major League Baseball Player's Association to hear both sides of disputes, grievances and salary arbitration hearings.
All arbiters are members of the American Arbitration Association, comprised largely of lawyers and college law professors, and headquartered in New York. Arbiters come from all parts of the country and are involved in many kinds of labor disputes, other than baseball.
For the purpose of salary arbitration hearings, in the event that MLB LRD and the MLBPA are unable to agree by January 1 in any year on arbiters to hear potential cases, they jointly shall request that the American Arbitration Association furnish them lists of prominent, professional arbitrators. Upon receipt of such lists, the arbitrators shall be selected by alternately striking names from the lists. All cases shall be assigned to three-arbitrator panels. The Association and the LRD shall designate one arbitrator to serve as the panel chair.
Some arbiters who have handled recent MLB issues include Shyam Das, Steven Wolf, Stephen Goldberg, Gil Vernon, John Sands, Dan Brent, Jack Clarke, Elizabeth Neumeier, Margaret Brogan and Elliott Shriftman.
